Season of Home

In October we look at our homes differently.

Almost everyone in the Netherlands knows the Oktober Woonmaand, the October home month, and yet hardly anyone knows where it comes from. There is no organisation behind it and no date on which it starts. It is a name the home and interior trade keeps alive itself, from the end of September to the beginning of November.

It most likely grew out of the Woonbeurs in Amsterdam, the home fair held in the RAI every autumn from 1993. Visitors took ideas home with them and went looking in October for what they had seen. The fair no longer exists, the Woonmaand does.

A morning in October

The moment still rings true. On a Saturday morning in October you sit on the sofa with a coffee, and the light comes in differently than it did a month ago. Lower, softer, reaching further into the room. Suddenly you notice the empty spot on the sideboard. The windowsill that has looked the same since spring. The corner next to the sofa where nothing burns in the evening.

That is what the Woonmaand is really about. You see your home in a new light.

Which Twin suits your home?

Twin is an oil lamp in handmade glass with stacked ridges, in sizes M and L. Each ridge catches the flame and passes it on a little further, and the colour of the glass decides how that light falls into the room. So first look at what is already there: your walls, your floor, the fabric on the sofa.

Clear belongs with white walls, linen and light oak. The glass holds nothing back, so in the evening the flame draws its ridges as lines across the tabletop.

Champagne sits with sand, beige and cappuccino, with a travertine floor or a wool throw. The light takes on a warm glow that lingers with earth tones.

Smoked goes against a dark wall. Anthracite, black, leather, dark wood. The glass softens the light, and that is exactly why the flame burns like a point in the room.

Green belongs with wood and plants. A windowsill full of greenery, a terracotta pot, a dining table where the grain still shows.

Amarant is for the room that already has colour. Burgundy, rust, deep brown. There it stands out without asking for attention. Amarant comes in size L.

If you are unsure, place an M and an L in the same colour together. Two heights complete a spot.

“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”
William Morris, The Beauty of Life, 1880

A windlight that moves with you

Cappuccino Glow M and Cappuccino Glow L are ceramic windlights in a warm brown tone. Right now there is moss and acorns inside. In December pine greenery, in spring a few branches of blossom. The windlight stays in the same place, only what is inside changes with the months.

For the shop during the Woonmaand

Place the whole Twin series on one shelf, all colours and both sizes. Customers then see for themselves which colour suits their home. Light cannot be shown on paper, it can on a shelf.

Seize the Moment.
